Medical fees (July 2010)

I have chosen to practice my profession outside the public health insurance system of Quebec as a non-participating physician (opted-out of medicare).  Consequently, the fees for my professional services are paid directly by the patients and are not refundable by the public health care system.

Private insurance is not authorized to refund the fees of non-participating physicians for Canadian citizens according to the Canadian health legislation, because the government wants to keep a monopoly on health care and discourage the appearance of a parallel private health care system.  We do give receipts for income tax deductions, because any medical fee, even for cosmetic procedures may allow some income tax deductions.

Cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance or medicare.

Insurance may reimburse some medication fees such as injections of local anesthesia.

Lab tests and hospital procedures are free of charge for Quebec residents, because hospitals are obligated to provide those services even for a patient whose physician is not affiliated with the hospital or is opted out of medicare.  Patients always have the right to consult other physicians who practice within medicare.

Liability insurance rules do not allow me to treat residents of other countries except in emergency situations and only for strictly medically necessary conditions.

   First consultation: $180

Regular consultations  are $130, there is a fee for every visit. Higher fees apply to complex cases and non-residents of Canada. There is a reduced fee for followup visits limited to wart cryotherapy.

Minor surgical procedures are often less than $500

Consultation fees do not include surgical fees or treatment fees

Vascular laser redness, spider veins (nose): $250/treatment, full face treatment for erythema, telangiectasia:  $350-$650/treatment

Photodynamic therapy: (face, without laser) $445 /treatment

   Chemical peel : (superficial) $950 /treatment, (medium) $1700 /treatment

   Superficial facial laser peel: ( dyschromia, pigmentation, photoaging ) = $1000 /treatment

Superficial facial laser peel with skin resurfacing of multiple benign skin growths: $2000 - $3000 /treatment

Superficial  laser peel upper chest: (Sun damage, pigmentation, dyschromia) = $1000 /treatment

Full face Erbium laser resurfacing: ( Wrinkles, acne scars ) $4500-$6000 /treatment

   Erbium laser vaporization of a single benign tumor: $450 ( $50 - $70 /additional lesion, $130 for laser touch-up if recurrence)

Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser: (pigmented lesions) $150 - $600 /treatment depending on number and extent of lesions

Botox: $400-$1100 (variable costs depending on anatomic units treated and total dose required)

Juvederm: $575 /syringe (refine), $500 /syringe (forma, ultra, ultra plus)

The average tattoo removal treatment costs approximately $250- $1000 each, but usually several treatments are needed.

The costs of laser hair removal are very competitive (Minimum $200 or $600/hour, whichever is the highest) Although many non-medical cosmetic centers advertise fees that may appear lower, they usually do a much higher number of treatments than us and the quality of their treatments is not subject to any medical supervision. We have no hidden fees or contracts to sign  or cosmetic products to sell.

Varicose veins: Initial examination: including Doppler ultrasound examination (1h) = $500 Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy: (ultrasound guidance for needle injection of major varicose veins) = $900 /treatment Foam sclerotherapy: (intermediate varicose veins) = $400 /treatment V-Beam Laser: (very fine varicose veins) = $400 /treatment Simple sclerotherapy : ( telangiectasia, varicosities, spider veins) = $260  /treatment

If those indications are insufficient to give you a rough estimate of the fees, you  must be diagnosed and evaluated in the office before progressing any further with your case.

All the fees mentioned in this site are approximate and will be readjusted following medical evaluation, they are in Canadian dollars for Canadian patients. Taxes apply for services that are exclusively cosmetic in nature. Fees are valid for 6 months from the date of this page update but may change later before the next page update. There is no guarantee of success and no refunds in case of treatment failure because medical science is not infallible and no treatment will be successful in 100% of cases for all patients.
